With Eddie Lack back out of the lineup, the Carolina Hurricanes have tapped Daniel Altshuller to fill his spot, recalling the third-year netminder.

Altshuller has split his season thus far between the Checkers and the Florida Everblades. The goaltender has appeared in five games this year with Charlotte, most recently a home start against Grand Rapids on Dec. 17. With Florida, Altshuller has thrived with a 5-0-1 record and a 1.69 goals-against average.

With Altshuller gone, the Checkers have turned to the PTO route for a backup goalie, inking C.J. Motte to a tryout deal.

The second-year pro has been starring for the ECHL’s Quad City Mallards this season, ranking second in the league in both goals-against average and save percentage, after taking the bulk of the time in goal for the ECHL’s Elmira Jackals as a rookie in 2015-16.

Motte, a 25-year-old native of Michigan, has four AHL contests under his belt, all coming during an ATO stint at the end of the 2014-15 season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers where he went 1-2-1 with a 2.83 goals-against average. Prior to that, Motte spent four seasons at Ferris State, where he helped the school to its first ever National Championship Game in 2011-12 and was named a Hobey Baker Award Finalist in 2013-14.

The Checkers are back in action tonight against the Chicago Wolves as they look for their first win of the new year.
