Following last night’s thrilling overtime loss, Michael Leighton is heading back to Carolina, as the Hurricanes have recalled the netminder and assigned Alex Nedeljkovic to Charlotte.

Leighton appeared in two games during his most recent stay in Charlotte, making 22 saves in Tuesday’s shutout loss to Milwaukee and then 28 saves in last night’s rematch. Those two contests marked the AHL All Star’s first game action with Charlotte since Dec. 13. Leighton returns to Carolina where he will continue to back up Cam Ward as netminder Eddie Lack recovers from a concussion.

Nedeljkovic returns to Charlotte after his first official NHL recall. The rookie goaltender made his NHL debut Tuesday night in his home state of Ohio as he relieved Ward in Carolina’s 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In just over a period of play, Nedeljkovic stopped all 17 shots he was peppered with.

The Checkers’ lengthy home stand rolls on this weekend with a pair of contests against a new foe, the Tucson Roadrunners.
