Ryan Murphy’s stint with the Checkers has ended, as the Hurricanes recalled the defenseman from his conditioning assignment Monday.

The fourth-year blue liner appeared in seven games for Charlotte during his stay, recording one assist along the way. The first-round pick and AHL All Star has now totaled 66 points in 89 games with the Checkers over his career.

As is the nature of conditioning assignments, Murphy’s stint in Charlotte was only to last a few weeks before he would return to Carolina, where he has logged one assist in four games thus far this season. For the Hurricanes to officially assign Murphy to Charlotte, the 23-year-old would have to clear waivers first.

The loss of Murphy leaves the Checkers with just six healthy options on the blue line as the team sits halfway through its long California road trip. Haydn Fleury and Trevor Carrick have each missed the first three games of the trip due to injury, with the former ruled “week-to-week” and the latter’s status unknown.
