The Checkers have released goalie Trevor Cann from his professional tryout contract, suggesting that John Muse is ready to return from injury.
The Checkers had signed Cann from their ECHL affiliate in Florida, early Sunday morning when it became apparent that Muse would not be able to play that afternoon’s game against the San Antonio Rampage. Cann provided backup for Mike Murphy in the Checkers’ 4-2 loss, with Daniels saying that Muse, who missed six games with an injury sustained mid-February, was considered day-to-day that night.
Cann, the 10th different goaltender to dress for a Checkers game this season, now returns to the Everblades, where he is 14-9-1 with a 3.00 goals-against average and .890 save percentage. The 24-year-old veteran of 45 AHL games, all with Lake Erie between 2009-2012, was originally drafted 49th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2007.
The Checkers now travel to Iowa to play games against the Wild on Tuesday and Wednesday. Muse earned his 22nd victory of the season in his last game on Friday, despite suffering the injury during the game, to tie the franchise record for most in a single season. He has won 19 of his 26 decisions dating back to Nov. 23 and has been responsible for all six Checkers victories since March 7.
It appears that forward Matthew Pistilli, who signed a professional tryout contract with the Checkers simultaneous to Cann, will remain with the team as it travels to Iowa. Pistilli, who as a healthy extra for Sunday’s game, has spent most of the last three months in the AHL, including two stints with Charlotte and one with Bridgeport.
