The Checkers will be getting two pieces back in time for their three-game road trip this week, with Carolina assigning Phil Di Giuseppe and Daniel Altshuller.
Di Giuseppe has split his time between Raleigh and Charlotte this season. After making his NHL debut earlier this season, the second-year pro has appeared in 18 games for the Hurricanes over two stints, recording eight points (3g, 5a) along the way. With the Checkers, Di Giuseppe has racked up 16 points (7g, 9a) in 22 games.
After tonight’s contest against Chicago, the Hurricanes have a week off for the NHL All-Star Break and will return to the ice Wednesday. Feb. 3. When healthy, Di Giuseppe has been consistently in the lineup since his initial recall, save for a two-game stint in Charlotte upon returning from a concussion. This move will allow him to play a quick three games in four nights with the Checkers during the break.
Altshuller returns from his first NHL recall, where he backed up Eddie Lack for four games but did not see any game action. The young netminder was recalled to replace Cam Ward, who suffered a concussion and was placed on IR. Ward has since returned to practice and Carolina head coach Bill Peters expects him to be ready when the Hurricanes return to action after the All-Star break.
Altshuller will be looking to pick up where he left off with the Checkers. The second-year pro, who made his AHL debut earlier this season, has put up gaudy numbers during his time with Charlotte, going 9-1-1 with a goals-against average of 1.71 and a .941 save percentage.
