The Carolina Hurricanes made a late-night transaction that could potentially benefit the Checkers as early as this afternoon.

Following their 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday, Carolina assigned forward Justin Shugg, who went scoreless in his first three NHL games this week, to Charlotte. It was not immediately clear if the 22-year-old would be able to return to the lineup in time to face the San Antonio Rampage at 1 p.m. – the Checkers’ last game before they break up for a five-day holiday hiatus.

Despite missing the Checkers’ last three games, Shugg remains the team’s goal-scoring leader with nine in 17 games. He ranks sixth on the team in points.
