As they wrap up their current five-game road trip, the Hurricanes have assigned rookie center Patrick Brown to the Checkers.

With Eric Staal healthy and activated from injured reserve, Carolina needed to make room for their captain in the lineup, leading to Brown’s return to Charlotte. The 22-year-old made the NHL squad out of training camp and has appeared in all seven games for the Hurricanes without recording a point.

Brown returns to Charlotte having played in two games for the Checkers this season, both against the Grand Rapids Griffins. The rookie will bring some support down the middle to a team that has brought in centers Mike Aviani and A.J. Jenks on professional tryout contracts.

In his senior year at Boston College, Brown served as team captain and scored 30 points (15g, 15a) in 40 games. He signed with Carolina this offseason as an undrafted free agent.
