Goalie Drew MacIntyre is heading to Raleigh on an emergency recall.
MacIntyre, 31, has handled the majority of the workload for the Checkers this season, starting in goal for 14 of the 20 games so far this season and accounting for six of the team's seven total wins. The 12-year veteran has appeared in six NHL games in his career with Buffalo, Vancouver and Toronto. This is his first time being called up since April 8 of last season, when he got his first NHL start for the Maple Leafs.
After leading the Toronto Marlies to game 7 of the Western Conference Finals last season, MacIntyre signed with Carolina over the summer. He spent training camp and the preseason with the Hurricanes before joining the Checkers to start the season. Cam Ward, who has started 17 of Carolina's 24 games so far, missed practice yesterday and has been ruled out of tonight's contest, predicating MacIntyre's recall.
The Hurricanes are currently in the middle of a five-game home stand. They will face the Washington Capitals tonight, before taking on the Detroit Red Wings Sunday and the New Jersey Devils Monday. The Checkers will finish up their five-game home stand this weekend as they host the Iowa Wild Saturday and Monday.
