St. Lawrence University today announced that it has hired Charlotte Checkers head coach Mark Morris as its new head coach.
In his lone season with the Carolina Hurricanes organization, Morris, 58, guided the Checkers to a 36-32-8 record. The only coach to win 300 games at both the collegiate and professional levels, Morris previously spent 14 seasons coaching Clarkson University from 1988-2002. St. Lawrence University, where Morris worked as an assistant coach from 1985-88, is located just 30 miles from Morris’ hometown of Massena, N.Y.
“We respect Mark’s decision to return home to coach at St. Lawrence,” said Ron Francis, the Hurricanes’ executive vice president and general manager. “We thank him for his work in Charlotte this season and wish him nothing but the best with the Saints.”
Morris was the second coach in the Checkers’ six AHL seasons following Jeff Daniels (2010-2015). His 374 career victories with Charlotte and Manchester rank seventh on the league’s all-time list.
