Mike Cornell is headed overseas to play next season in Germany.
The 28-year-old blue liner signed a contract this weekend with the Straubing Tigers of the DEL.
Cornell appeared in 69 games for the Checkers over the past two seasons. The Massachusetts native served as a strong, physical presence on the Charlotte blue line, amassing 208 penalty minutes during his tenure with the club, including tying for the league lead among defensemen in major penalties this past campaign.
The entirety of Cornell’s time in Charlotte was spent on PTOs. After suiting up for 18 games in 2014-15, the Checkers called upon the third-year pro again this past season and held onto him as he appeared in 51 games and logged significant minutes on the blue line.
