THE STORYLINES
LIGHTING THE LAMP
The Checkers have dropped two of their last three games, and those two defeats have something in common - a lack of offense. They recorded one goal between those two contests, while racking up six in the win in between. That has been the story of their season thus far when expanded out as well. Charlotte is a perfect 4-0-0-0 when scoring at least three goals in a game and 2-4-0-0 when falling beneath that threshold. They’ll look to jump-start their attack this weekend against an Iowa team that is on a four-game losing streak in which they’ve surrendered at least three goals on three different occasions.
POWERING UP
After a bit of a slow start, Charlotte’s power play has been trending up as of late. The Checkers have recorded a power-play goal in three of their last five games, posting a 19.1 percent clip over that stretch.Helping to propel that unit have been the duo of Jack Devine (3 power-play goals) and Angus Crookshank (1 power-play goal, 2 power-play assists). In fact, either Crookshank or Devine has factored into five of the six power-play goals that Charlotte has scored this season.
ON THE ROAD
This trek to Iowa will be the Checkers’ fourth two-game set on the road this season. They are 3-3-0-0 away from home thus far, and they have split each of those previous series. The Wild have one win in five home games this season. They boast plenty of dangerous weapons, though, including former Checker Gerry Mayhew - who led them in goals last season - and the recently signed Arthur Kaliyev - who scored 40 goals last season for Belleville.
