QUICK HITS
SERIES OF CONSEQUENCE
The Atlantic continues to be one of the most competitive divisions in the AHL, and this two-game set with the Phantoms is pivotal for both sides. The Checkers currently slot in at third place - trailing the first and second-place Bruins and Bears by nine and 11 points, respectively - while both Lehigh Valley and Springfield sit three points behind Charlotte in the standings.STREAK SNAPPED
The Checkers saw their red-hot run of six consecutive wins come to an end with Saturday’s loss to the Marlies. Despite seeing its streak snapped, Charlotte remains one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference with a 7-2-1-0 record over the last 10 games.Unlucky for the Checkers, a good chunk of the Atlantic Division has been on equally impressive heaters as of late. That includes the Phantoms, who are 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games and have beaten the heavyweight Hershey Bears twice in their last five games.
SOURDIF STAYS SCORING
Justin Sourdif has caught fire as of late, currently riding a five-game scoring streak that has seen him post seven points in total. The rookie has also recorded a pair of assists in each of his last games.UP THE SHOTS
The Checkers have embraced putting pucks on net over their most recent stretch of games, registering at least 40 shots in three of their last four games. That high volume of rubber has pushed them into the fifth-highest average of shots per game in the AHL.The uptick in shots has reflected on the score sheet as well, as the Checkers have scored at least four goals in six of their last seven games.
Lehigh Valley has done a solid job of suppressing opponents this season, ranking ninth in the AHL in terms of shots allowed per game, though their goals-against average ranks near the middle of the league.
FINISH STRONG
The Checkers have come alive late over this most recent stretch of games. They have scored three goals in the third period of each of their last three games and have hit that mark four times in the last five games.QUOTES
Checkers Head Coach Geordie Kinnear following Saturday's loss to Toronto"It was a good lesson. We’ll move on, get a good day of rest, get back at it Monday and get better."
