After selecting high-flying blue liner Jake Bean and big forward Julien Gauthier in the first round, the Hurricanes faced a busy Saturday. Carolina held seven picks during the second day of the NHL Draft, including three in the third round alone.

Information and profiles on each day two pick is below. This page will be updated throughout the day, so check back for each pick.

Round 2, 43rd overall - (C) Janne Kuokkanen

The Canes kick things off on day 2 by adding yet another young Finnish talent in forward Janne Kuokkanen.

The 18-year-old spent the majority of his last season with Karpat’s Jr. team, registering an impressive 53 points (22g, 31a) in 47 games, while also appearing in one game for Karpat’s top club. Kuokkanen joins an increasing stockpile of gifted offensive weapons in the Hurricane’s system, joining Sebastian Aho, who he has played alongside before, and Aleksi Saarela. The 6-foot-1 forward points to his “play-making skill” as his best attribute.

Coming from Europe, Kuokkanen would be eligible to join the Checkers next season should he not make the NHL club, but will likely return to his native Finland to continue his development.

Round 3, 67th overall - (LW) Matt Filipe

With the 67th pick, Carolina select Matt Filipe, an 18-year-old Massachusetts-born forward.

The 6-foot-2 winger spent last season with Cedar Rapids of the USHL and ranked third on the RoughRiders with 19 goals as a rookie. Filipe is slated to head to Northeastern University to begin his collegiate career in the fall.

Round 3, 74th overall - (C) Hudson Elynuik

The Canes continue their run on forwards by taking Hudson Elynuik out of the WHL.

The Calgary native enjoyed a breakout year for the Spokane Chiefs last season, totaling 44 points in 56 games and tying for third on the team with 19 goals. Elynuik, who stands at a towering 6-foot-5, also stepped up in the WHL playoffs, tying for the team lead in postseason goals.

Round 3, 75th overall - (G) Jack Lafontaine

The Hurricanes follow that selection up by drafting netminder Jack Lafontaine out of the NAHL one pick later.

Lafontaine starred between the pipes last season for the Janesville Jets, going 24-8-7 with a stellar 2.16 goals-against average. The Mississauga native also earned himself a spot on the NAHL All-Midwest Division Team.

Lafontaine is committed to begin his college career in the crease for the University of Michigan in the fall.

Round 4, 104th overall - (LW) Max Zimmer

In the fourth round, Carolina again taps a college-bound player in forward Max Zimmer.

A left wing hailing from Minnesota, Zimmer had a big year for the USHL’s Chicago Steel last season, ranking third on the team with 37 points in 55 games and ranking second with 16 goals.

The 18-year-old is committed to the University of Wisconsin.

Round 5, 134th overall - (G) Jeremy Helvig

Moving along to the fifth round, the Canes go back to the goaltender well, selecting Jeremy Helvig.

The 19-year-old Ontario native starred for the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs last season alongside fellow Hurricanes prospects Roland McKeown and Warren Foegele. Helvig went 19-3-1 for the Frontenacs while registering a 2.13 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, both of which were best in the OHL among goalies with more than two games played.

This marks the first time that the Hurricanes have selected two goalies in one draft since 2012, when they picked Daniel Altshuller and Collin Olson.

Round 6, 164th overall - (D) Noah Carroll

With their final selection in the 2016 draft, the Canes pick up another blue liner, adding 18-year-old Noah Carroll from the OHL’s Guelph Storm.

Carroll ranked third among Guelph defensemen in scoring with 14 points.
