Center was a fairly stacked group in terms of contributions, including the third-ranked all-time goal scorer (Zac Dalpe), two current NHLers (Riley Nash and Victor Rask) and an All Star (Jon Matsumoto). But when it came down to it, none of them made as much of an impact on the franchise as Brett Sutter.
Voting Breakdown: Center
1. Brett Sutter | 75% |
2. Riley Nash | 16% |
3. Victor Rask | 3% |
4. Zac Dalpe | 5% |
5. Jon Matsumoto | 1% |
Sutter possessed an well-rounded game that allowed him to help the team in every facet of the game. Aside from ranking in the top five in games played, goals, assists and points, he had a physical edge and didn't hesitate to drop the gloves if need be, ranking third all-time in penalty minutes.
Where he really shined was in the big moments. Sutter played an integral part in the team's first playoff appearance, recording 14 points in 16 games as the Checkers fought their way to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they ran into the eventual Calder Cup champion Binghamton Senators. He ranks second all-time in playoff scoring and is tied for first in playoff games played.
Sutter's role as one of the best leaders in the team's history, as well as his transformation from a role player to a bona fide scorer (put up 40+ points in each of his final two seasons with the Checkers after never scoring more than 29) made him one of the most impactful players to don a Checkers sweater and your overwhelming choice for the center slot on the All-Time All-Stars team.
