Needing a defenseman to take the place of the suspended Keegan Lowe for this Friday’s game against Chicago, the Checkers recalled Tyler Ganly from the ECHL’s Florida Everblades.
Ganly, 20, recorded one assist and two penalty minutes in 15 games with the Everblades since joining them on Dec. 8. The Carolina Hurricanes’ sixth-round draft pick in 2013 began the season in Charlotte, posting one assist in his first six games as a professional prior to joining Florida.
A 6-foot-2, 204-pound rookie from Mississauga, Ontario, Ganly recently completed a three-year OHL career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where he recorded 54 points (5g, 49a) and 159 penalty minutes in 167 games while playing alongside Checkers forward Sergey Tolchinsky.
Lowe’s suspension, a one-game ban for his fight following the final buzzer of the Checkers’ last game against Manitoba on Sunday, had left Charlotte short on defensemen. Fellow blueliner Danny Biega missed the team’s last six games due to injury, while Brett Pesce and Jaccob Slavin have evolved into regulars at the NHL level with Carolina.
