Daniel Altshuller is headed to Raleigh as the Hurricanes have recalled the netminder from Charlotte.

This marks the first NHL recall for the second-year pro, who also made his AHL debut this season. After tearing up the ECHL, leading the league in goals-against average and save percentage at the time and earning ECHL Goaltender of the Month, Altshuller joined the Checkers in mid-December to prepare for Drew MacIntyre’s Spengler Cup absence. The 21-year-old made 24 saves and earned the win in his AHL debut against Iowa on Dec. 17 and has since been a brick wall for the Checkers. Through 11 games, Altshuller is 9-1-1 with a goals-against average of 1.71, a save percentage of .941% and one shutout. His shutout was the first by a Checker since April of 2014.

Altshuller and rookie Rasmus Tirronen have been handling the crease duties over the last few weeks as MacIntyre has been sidelined with an injury he suffered in Switzerland at the Spengler Cup. Altshuller’s departure leaves a hole in the Checkers’ roster, but MacIntyre could be poised to re-enter the lineup as he has resumed skating over the last week.

The Checkers welcome the Chicago Wolves to town for back-to-back meetings this weekend before heading out on a quick three-game road trip next week that will carry them into the All Star break.
