The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that they have mutually parted ways with Checkers head coach Mike Vellucci.
Vellucci served as the Checkers’ head coach for each of the last two seasons, logging a 97-43-12 record and a .678 points percentage during his tenure. He was at the helm for the team’s best season to date, logging the league’s best regular-season record in 18-19 and capturing the franchise’s first ever Calder Cup. The Michigan native also served as the Hurricanes’ assistant general manager for four seasons.
The Checkers head coaching job was Vellucci’s first in the pro ranks, as he previously spent 14 seasons behind the bench for the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers.
The Checkers will now look for their fifth head coach in franchise history. Prior to Vellucci, Charlotte was helmed by Ulf Samuelsson (2016-17), Mark Morris (2015-16) and Jeff Daniels (2010-15).
