Free agent goalie Drew MacIntyre has signed a new two-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, ensuring that one of the Checkers’ key free agents will be returning to the organization next season.
The Hurricanes on Friday announced a new-one year deal with MacIntyre, who ranks ninth in the 79-year history of the AHL with 212 career victories. He has the opportunity to continue rapidly climbing those ranks as he enters the 2015-16 season just 20 away from fifth place.
A 31-year-old veteran of 12 professional seasons, MacIntyre set Checkers single-season records for games played (51 – fifth AHL), minutes played (2,936 – sixth AHL) and saves made (1,474 – second AHL) last season. He made 40 or more saves on eight separate occasions and was one of the league’s top performers in the shootout, where he stopped 21 of 23 shots.
MacIntyre, who dressed for one NHL game as Carolina’s backup last season, has played 404 AHL games with eight different teams since debuting with Grand Rapids in 2004. He has an all-time record of 212-143-26 with a 2.48 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.
MacIntyre joins Daniel Altshuller, who spent the majority of his rookie season with ECHL Florida, and Rasmus Tirronen, who signed as a college free agent in March, as goaltenders under two-way contracts with Carolina for next season. His partner in 2014-15, John Muse, is on an expiring AHL deal.
