After an injury on the blue line last night, the Carolina Hurricanes have recalled defenseman Danny Biega from Charlotte.
James Wisniewski, acquired by the Hurricanes over the offseason, left Thursday’s season opener against Nashville early in the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return. This afternoon, the Hurricanes announced that he will undergo surgery for a torn ACL and will be out for an estimated six montsh.
The Hurricanes still have an extra defensemen on the roster in former Checkers captain Michal Jordan, but to make up for the loss of Wisniewski, the Hurricanes have called up Biega, who will be starting his third pro season.
Biega earned his first recall at the tail end of last season, appearing in 10 games for Carolina and notching a pair of assists. Aside from that stint, the 24-year-old spent the rest of his season in Charlotte, where he notched 14 points, good for fourth among team defensemen.
The move creates a sizeable opening on the Checkers blue line as Biega was likely slated to log significant minutes on one of the team’s top two pairings. But the two extra defensemen still on Charlotte’s roster leave the team covered as they head into this weekend’s contests in Iowa. Look for Jake Chelios or rookie Tyler Ganly to slide into the lineup to replace Biega, should he miss this weekend’s games.
In other roster news, the Checkers have released forward Ryan Rashid from his training camp tryout and signed David Wohlberg to a professional tryout contract.
A product of the University of Michigan, Wohlberg has spent each of his three pro seasons with the Albany Devils. The 25-year-old center came to Checkers training camp as an invite and has earned himself a spot on the roster for the time being.
