With the trade deadline in the rear-view mirror, the Hurricanes have recalled several players from Charlotte to shore up their lineup.
Brock McGinn and Ryan Murphy continue to shuttle to and from Carolina, while Derek Ryan heads to the NHL for the first time in his career.
Ryan signed with Carolina this past offseason after spending the first four years of his pro career in Europe, including an MVP campaign in 2014-15 with Orebro that saw him lead the Swedish Hockey League in scoring. The 29-year-old has spent the entirety of his first season in North America with the Checkers, where he has paced the club with 17 goals and 42 points while serving as the fourth team captain in franchise history.
This marks Ryan’s first NHL recall and reunites the forward with Bill Peters, who served as his coach for two seasons with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs.
McGinn returns to the Hurricanes after making his NHL debut earlier this year. The second-year pro has suited up for 19 games with Carolina this season, notching three goals and one assist.
Murphy has split his third pro season between the Checkers and Hurricanes, and now heads back to Carolina, where he has four helpers in 19 contests this season. Over the course of his career, Murphy has racked up 108 NHL games, compiling 29 points (6g, 23a) along the way.
The loss of Ryan and McGinn is quite the blow to the Checkers’ offense. The duo represents two of the team’s top three scorers, as well as the two leading goal scorers on the team, both overall and on the power play. Murphy has been a consistent producer at the AHL level and heads to Raleigh having put up six points in his last seven games with the Checkers, including a helper in each of his last three.
