The Hurricanes announced today that they have signed defensive prospect Josh Wesley to a three-year, entry-level contract.
A fourth-round selection by Carolina in 2014, Wesley recently wrapped up his third season of junior hockey, helping lead the Niagara IceDogs to the OHL Finals, where they were defeated by the eventual Memorial Cup champion London Knights.
Wesley totaled 37 points (12g, 25a) and 164 penalty minutes over 188 games in his junior career, spent mostly with Plymouth/Flint before being traded to Niagara alongside fellow Hurricanes prospect Alex Nedeljkovic midway through the 2015-16 campaign.
The 6-foot-3, 201-pound blue liner made his pro debut on an ATO with the Checkers at the end of the 2014-15 season, going scoreless in 7-2 Charlotte’s season finale win over the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Wesley, son of former Hurricanes player and current Director of Defensemen Development Glen Wesley, turned 20 this past April, making him eligible to begin his pro career with the Checkers next season.
