Defenseman Michal Jordan is back in the fold, as the Hurricanes agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the restricted free agent on Thursday.
Jordan, 22, is coming off a breakout year in which he made his NHL debut with Carolina and competed in the AHL All-Star Classic in his third professional season. He also scored a career-high six goals, tying him for first on the team despite playing a career-low 54 games.
The Czech Republic native, Carolina’s fourth-round draft choice in 2008, will join a glut of blueliners, including former Checkers teammates Brett Bellemore and Ryan Murphy and new signings Matt Corrente and Mark Flood, that will be competing for spots in Carolina. Barring that, he would become an experienced anchor on a Charlotte defense that will welcome a group of first-year players providing he clears waivers, something he would need to do for the first time now that his entry-level deal has expired.
Jordan becomes the second restricted free agent to re-sign with Carolina this week, joining Riley Nash, who agreed to a two-year, two-way deal on Tuesday. Players remaining on the Hurricanes’ restricted list are goaltender Mike Murphy and forwards Zach Boychuk, Zac Dalpe and Jared Staal.
