With the New York Rangers coming to town tomorrow, the Hurricanes have recalled forward Sergey Tolchinsky from Charlotte.
This marks the first NHL recall for Tolchinsky, who is in his first year of pro hockey.
The 21-year-old Russian has been an offensive weapon for the Checkers as of late, putting up four points in his last four games and 10 in his last 17. Tolchinsky has also become just the seventh rookie in franchise history to record 30 points in a season, ranking fourth on the team with 32 (11g, 21a).
Tolchinsky is now the 14th different Charlotte player to earn a recall this season and should he play in tomorrow night’s contest, he would become the seventh Checkers player to make their NHL debut this season. He is also just the sixth rookie over the last three seasons to earn an NHL recall.
The loss of Tolchinsky cancels out the addition of Brody Sutter this morning and leaves the Checkers with 10 healthy options up front. Tomorrow’s practice should shed some light on whether some of the injured players will be ready to suit up for Friday, but the Checkers could find themselves shorthanded heading into the weekend. The Hurricanes play tomorrow night and then Saturday, leaving the door open to have some of those recalled forwards return for the Checkers’ game Friday, should they choose to do so.
