Phil Di Giuseppe is headed back to the NHL, as the Hurricanes have recalled the forward from the Checkers.
In the eight games since being assigned to Charlotte, Di Giuseppe has been one of the club’s hottest scorers. The third-year pro has piled up seven points (2g, 5a), all of which came during a six-game point streak that was snapped in yesterday’s loss to Iowa.
Di Giuseppe, who spent the majority of his sophomore season last year with the Canes, has been a dangerous offensive weapon for the Checkers over his career, compiling 56 points (21g, 35a) in 112 AHL games.
The recall of Di Giuseppe, necessitated by the loss of Jordan Staal in Carolina’s win last night over Florida, leaves the Checkers with 12 healthy forwards heading into their long California road trip, including PTO signee Cason Hohmann, who has yet to make his debut. The team continues to miss the injured contingent up front of Brendan Woods, Patrick Dwyer and Connor Brickley.
Additionally, the Checkers have recalled Josh Wesley from the Florida Everblades.
Wesley, who ranks fourth among Everblades defensemen with four points in eight games, has appeared in one game thus far for Charlotte. He returns to the Checkers after fellow rookie Haydn Fleury exited Sunday’s game with an injury. There is currently no update to Fleury’s status heading into this week’s road trip.
