Carolina Hurricanes prospect Daniel Altshuller will begin his professional career with the Florida Everblades.
The Checkers, who retain a pair of more experienced options in Drew MacIntyre and John Muse on the active roster, assigned the 20-year-old goaltender to their ECHL affiliate on Monday. Altshuller, the Hurricanes’ third-round pick (69th overall) in 2012, stopped 31 of 35 shots in his only exhibition game of the preseason – a 4-1 loss at Norfolk on Saturday.
Altshuller (6-foot-4, 201 pounds) turns pro this season after going 78-47-8 in 140 games over three seasons with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. The native of Nepean, Ontario, ranked fourth among OHL netminders in goals-against average (2.56) and fifth save percentage (.917) during the 2013-14 regular season. He went on to lead all league goaltenders with a 1.89 goals-against average in the playoffs.
With the Checkers also assigning tryout forwards Kevin Lynch and Mitch Wahl to the Everblades earlier Monday, their training camp roster now stands at 24 players pending Zach Boychuk clearing waivers at noon Tuesday.
