Moments after the Checkers made Zach Boychuk a healthy scratch for Sunday evening’s game in Chicago, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they had recalled the forward to help cover for some early-season injuries.
Boychuk, the reigning Willie Marshall Award winner as the AHL’s top goal scorer with 36 last season, played in the Checkers’ first two games of the season, scoring one goal. The 25-year-old had just returned to the Checkers on Oct. 6 as the Hurricanes made him one of their final cuts from training camp.
Already dealing with the losses of Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner to injury in the preseason, the Hurricanes saw Eric Staal and Patrick Dwyer suffer injuries of a yet-to-be-announced degree of severity during Saturday’s loss to the New York Islanders.
The move leaves the Checkers with 12 forwards, one of whom, Carter Sandlak, missed Saturday’s loss in Chicago due to injury but returned to play Sunday. Following Sunday’s game, the Checkers are off until their home opener against Grand Rapids this Friday, while the Hurricanes return to action by hosting Buffalo on Tuesday.
