The Hanson Brothers, made famous in the 1977 movie “Slap Shot,” invaded Charlotte for Husqvarna Old-Time Hockey Weekend.
The weekend included appearances by the Hanson Brothers at Friday’s game, specialty retro jerseys worn by the Checkers and a special screening of “Slap Shot” at the new Studio Movie Grill EpiCentre. The in-game entertainment focused on Charlotte’s rich hockey history and 15,000 fans packed Time Warner Cable Arena for the two-game set.
The specialty jerseys were auctioned live after Friday’s game and raised more than $18,000 for the Charlotte Checkers Charitable Foundation, while proceeds from the movie screening benefited Hayden’s Hope, a local extension of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. A VIP meet and greet session was also held at the Checkers’ offices Saturday, where a limited number of fans got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hang out with the Hanson Brothers and discuss their careers and little-known facts about “Slap Shot.”
