An injury-hit Checkers team is getting a quality reinforcement in the form of Brock McGinn.
The second-year forward, who has not played for the Checkers since scoring two goals in their first two games on Oct. 10 and 11, returns after a 12-game stint with the Carolina Hurricanes. During that time, he posted three points (2g, 1a), including a goal on his first-ever NHL shift, and four penalty minutes.
Barring an unforeseen development, McGinn should be available as the Checkers return to action for two more games at Bojangles’ Coliseum this Friday and Saturday against Milwaukee. The timing is good for Charlotte, which has seen a number of players (forwards Zach Boychuk, T.J. Hensick and Brody Sutter and defensemen Danny Biega, Tyler Ganly and Keegan Lowe) miss practice time this week.
A second-round draft choice by the Hurricanes in 2012, McGinn, 21, finished third on the Checkers and first among rookies with 15 goals last season.
