Now that we’re affiliated with the Florida Panthers, we’re going to spend the next several weeks introducing you to some of their prospects that could end up on the Checkers’ roster at some point. Now up: Max Gildon.
Max Gildon is a 21-year-old defenseman who is set to begin his pro career after signing with Florida in March. In three seasons at the University of New Hampshire, the Panthers’ third-round pick in 2017 was an offensive standout, amassing 73 points (21g, 52) in 101 games and leading team defensemen in scoring each season. He has represented the U.S. at the international level, leading all tournament defensemen with four goals at the 2017 U18 World Junior Championship.
WHAT KIND OF PLAYER IS HE?
An all-around defenseman, Gildon has size (6-foot-3, 191 pounds) and physical play (at least 40 penalty minutes in each of his three collegiate seasons) to go along with his impressive offensive numbers.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON?
Gildon set a career high with 29 points (7g, 22a) in just 34 games – good enough to lead all New Hampshire skaters. He ranked third among Hockey East defensemen in scoring and was named to its third All-Star Team.
WHAT DID FORMER PANTHERS GM DALE TALLON SAY?
"Max is a dynamic and exciting young defenseman who possesses size and skill and plays the game with an edge," Tallon said in the Panthers’ press release announcing Gildon’s signing. "Since beginning his collegiate career, he has been a key player for the University of New Hampshire and has been a leader for his team. We are thrilled for Max to take the next step in his development with the Panthers."
WHAT’S A FUN FACT ABOUT HIM?
A native of Plano, he would be the second Texas-born player to suit up for the Checkers following Cason Hohmann, who played two games on a pro tryout contract in 2016-17.
