Now that we’re affiliated with the Florida Panthers, we’re going to spend the next several weeks introducing you to some of their prospects that could end up on the Checkers’ roster at some point. Now up: Chase Priskie.
WHO IS HE?
Chase Priskie is a 24-year-old defenseman who split last season between the Checkers and the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds due to a late-season trade. The Quinnipiac alum, initially a sixth-round draft pick by the Washington Capitals who signed his first pro contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, is set to begin his second pro season.
WHAT KIND OF PLAYER IS HE?
An offensive-minded defenseman, Priskie has produced points at every level thus far. He finished his college career with 116 points in 154 games, including 39 points in 36 games as a senior.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON?
Priskie was one of the AHL’s top rookie defensemen in terms of scoring as he finished the season tied for fourth in that category with 31 points. After the Panthers acquired him in a five-player trade centered around Vincent Trocheck, he scored four points in five games for Springfield before the season shut down in March. He accompanied the Panthers to the Toronto bubble for their play-in series against the New York Islanders but did not play.
WHAT DOES HEAD COACH GEORDIE KINNEAR SAY?
"He had some impact when he came in. The thing I really liked about him was that he had one bad game but then the next night he had a goal and an assist and was a dominant player. That’s a sign of the type of player you want. Everybody’s going to have a bad game or make a mistake, but it’s how you react after that. He’s a student of the game that really wants it bad and is ultra competitive. He’s a game breaker and can play the modern game where the D are always joining the attack. He’s a player that everyone’s excited about moving forward. He’s a quality, quality guy that wants to get to that next level.”
WHAT'S HE DOING NOW?
Priskie is with the Panthers as they prepare to start training camp tomorrow.
WHAT’S A FUN FACT ABOUT HIM?
A native of the nearby suburb of Pembroke Pines, Priskie would be the first South Florida native to play for the hometown Panthers.
